With over 100 million copies sold in over 40 languages, millions have grown
up with The Lord of the Rings, the classic epic tale considered by millions
to be the greatest fantasy-adventure story ever told. J.R.R. Tolkiens phenomenal
epic trilogy chronicles the struggle between good and evil for possession
of a magical ring. The book trilogy, named the most popular book of the 20th
Century, is the motion picture event of the 21st Century. The Lord of the
Rings is presented in a trilogy of feature films from New Line Cinema, The
Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, the last
to be released in December 2003. A work of sheer invention on a staggering
scale, The Lord of the Rings takes us back to Middle-earth, an era that predates
written history, where humans share the world with immortal elves, powerful
wizards, and industrious dwarves.
Gandalf (also known as Gandalf the Grey and later as Gandalf the White) is an old, but powerful wizard who was an important influence at the Council of Elrond, since he knew the power The One Ring possessed and the evil the Dark Lord Sauron could do if he recovered it. He joined Frodo and the other selected members of the Fellowship as they crossed Middle-earth in their quest to destroy the ring. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf the Grey carried an old wooden staff, which also housed his pipe, but it was lost when he was captured by Saruman in Isengard. After Gandalfs escape he possessed a new staff but it too was lost when he was slain in Khazad-dum, while defending his companions from the Balrog. In The Two Towers, Gandalf was sent back to Middle-earth as Gandalf the White, and to complete his task he was given a new white staff to aid in the battle to defeat Sauron. The staff was adorned with an intricate and delicately styled crown that held a great power. Gandalf released King Theoden from Sarumans influence with the aid of this magical staff. Next to his trusty sword Glamdring, the white staff was Gandalfs chief weapon.
